Web 3.0 is already taking shape to advance the internet to a new level.
If you’ve been trying to get to grips with Web 3.0, you’ll keep finding the same keywords describing the concept:
- Semantics
- Consolidated Dynamic Content
- Intelligent Software
Confusing. So what do these terms mean?
- The Oxford English Dictionary defines Semantics as: the branch of linguistics that deals with the study of meaning; the study of the relationships between signs and symbols and what they represent; the principles that determine the truth-values of formulas in a logical system.
- Consolidated Dynamic Content means: bringing together all the dynamic content provisos such as social media and information feeders.
- Intelligent Software means: a system that knows exactly what you’re looking for, what you’re interested in and what it thinks you should be looking at.
Even more confused? Let’s put all of this together to make sense of it all.
- There’s lots of dynamic content being produced every second that populates the web that shapes the types of information that individuals are looking for. Pulling all of this together with intelligent software means a one-stop shop of information that is filtered to be relevant.
- The semantics bit comes in when you try to make sense of the intelligent software and revolves around the word ‘relationships’. Everything that is related to and linked to a particular field will be consolidated to give you an overall description of what you’re looking for.
- Didn’t AskJeeves do this? Well, they tried it and failed. Web1.0 and 2.0 is too focussed on keyword recognition. Google realises this too. If you type in the words “I want to buy a new LED television in Lincoln” the main keywords are LED television, Lincoln. This does not produce any results relevant – they’re all forums, but this is the dynamic content that we mentioned earlier. Web 3.0, using consolidation and intelligence will present me with a list of places where I can buy a new LED television in Lincoln and perhaps even link it to my lifestyle as to the types of manufacturer and model I’d buy!
In Layman’s terms, what is Web 3.0?
In my view, Web 3.0 is all me, me, me, me.
An intelligent web that knows what I like, what I want, how I want it, knows where I live, and is all controlled by me. I can manipulate how I want to receive information, what’s important for me and a high level of personalisation. The web gets all the information about me from the social sites, my website and my browsing history and delivers filtered, relevant information that I’m looking for.
Who’s already working towards it? iGoogle, the BBC Homepage has aspects of it, social media and bookmarking sites, Lycos, the further development of mobile internet via ipad and smartphones.
How far away is it? Some suggest it’s 5 years away, some say it’s 2-3 years away, some say it’s 7 years away. Irrelevant of what different people think, the internet is constantly evolving. Web 3.0 will arrive, and then so will Web 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 …..
