Link Spam

Fed up of receiving emails asking for links to your website?

Remember, the main aims of links are:

  1. To increase traffic and sales
  2. To improve PageRank and thus the importance of the site
  3. To show authority and/or provide readers with further knowledge and guidance.

What makes a good link?

Google, within its algorithm, knows a good link from a bad link. Matt Cutts in a recent interview pointed out that having 10 good links is better than having 100 bad links.

Example: If we, as a marketing and web design company have a link from a manufacturer of bathroom furniture pointing to our site; is this a good or bad link? Answer: A bad link, because the two sites have no relevance to each other.

If we have a link from a manufacturer of computer equipment’s website; is this a good or bad link? Answer: A good link, because there is relevance through the web design bit.

Does Google see the relevance between sites? you bet it does. Take a look on the backlinks of websites and you’ll see that Google lists the most relevant sites first.

The truth is, that the more relevant the link, added to a high PageRank of that site means even more PageRank for you, and a boost up the search engine results.

So SEO and linking’s easy then? In a word: no. Getting relevant links is extremely difficult. One of the reasons being that web design companies don’t normally link with other web design companies because it’s competition.

The next time you get a link spam email to link with a site that offers hot tubs, think about it. Will it add any credibility to your website if your site is a book shop?
